Prefabricated Cabin Modular Substations: Key Technologies and Future Perspectives

With the socio-economic development in China, the continuous expansion of power grid infrastructure has intensified conflicts between grid construction and urban development. These challenges are primarily manifested in the scarcity of land resources, surging electricity demand, and urgent needs for improved power supply reliability and shortened construction cycles. For example: emergency requirements for substation construction driven by rapidly growing loads in urban centers; critical need for 110kV power supply nodes to support newly added industrial consumers in industrial parks; capacity expansion and retrofitting of aging substations to address insufficient distribution feeder circuits; and temporary enhancement of power reliability for political, economic, or cultural event zones. Traditional substation construction speed and models can hardly meet these demands. Adopting new substation models featuring modularity, flexibility, rapid deployment, reliability, and advanced technology aligns perfectly with these requirements.

Currently, prefabricated cabin modular substations (hereinafter referred to as prefabricated cabin substations) are being deployed domestically and internationally. For instance, State Grid Corporation of China proposed the concept of standardized prefabricated substations in 2013, achieving the goal of "standardized design, factory production, and modular construction" for substations. Internationally, leading electrical equipment manufacturers such as ABB, Siemens, and Schneider have developed modular solutions like E-house and Power House – outdoor modular steel enclosure substations or switching stations. Beyond power systems, prefabricated cabin substations have also been widely adopted in sectors including oil and chemical, mining and metallurgy, renewable energy, offshore wind booster stations, and data centers. Their advantages – rapid deployment, compact footprint, and minimal on-site construction – have driven extensive application.
